Benefits of Couples Therapy
Couples therapy can help partners change negative patterns of behaviour and learn how to communicate with each other better. Therapy provides a safe space to address and improve conflicts and disagreements.
It can help partners understand each other's needs and point of view, reducing future conflict.
What to Expect
Initial assessment: The process usually starts with an initial assessment. At this session, the therapist meets the couple and discusses their concerns, aims, and expectations. This helps the therapist understand the dynamics of the relationship and tailor the plan for future sessions.
Therapy sessions: Each couples therapy session typically lasts around 50 to 60 minutes. Many couples meet with their therapist every week, but arrangements can be different to suit that couple and their other commitments (such as work or childcare).
Therapists have different techniques and you should find one that suits you. For example, some therapists use traditional questioning and listening, others include role-playing exercises and set homework. It is important you are comfortable with the process.
Confidentiality: Therapy sessions are confidential, meaning that what is discussed is private between the couple and their therapist. There are some exceptions, such as if there is a risk of harm to someone.
Duration of Therapy: The number of sessions varies depending on the nature of the issues and the progress that is made in the sessions. Some couples may see significant improvement in a few sessions, while others may benefit from long-term therapy to address deeper-rooted issues.
